1. Boost your confident level by believing in yourself
“I was too shy to speak speak. I was afraid people would laugh at my mistakes me. How will they judge me if my spoken English is so poor?"
The fact is we all started not knowing how to speak a single word. There is always a learning curve. We just need to treat those learning experiences as part and parcel of learning. It is better to be laugh at while we are learning the language in school then at work. It would not cost us anything for being laugh at at school, but it will cost us our job if we make mistakes while at work.
If so many people are able to speak fluent English, I bet you can do the same. You are as normal as the other users of English. So start speaking in English and lift your confidence level up.
2. First Listen then Speak, Read then Write. Repeat these 4 steps
These are the 4 steps we have to follow: Listen then Speak, Read then Write. These are the input and output process. When you are Listening, you are inputting the sound of the language into your system. You need to follow the sounds and say the words out. Then, listen a little more, Speak a little more. Read a little more. Write a little more. Do this all the time until it becomes a habit in your routine.
3. Keep Exploring and keep your ears open
English is everywhere, not only in the classroom. It’s on the internet, there are millions of websites written in English. English is also in online videos (youtube.com), news channels (BBC, CNN, etc), on radio. So listen and build your vocabulary there, it is very effective and you should try it today!
4. Simple ways of answering questions
Do you look into the mirror everyday? Questions are like mirrors. Reverse the question, and find the answer in the question itself. For example:
Does she…? | Yes, she does |
Is it…? | Yes, it is |
Can he? | Yes, he can |
5. Make the mirror your best friend
I am sure you have a mirror at home and you probably look at it everyday. Speak English to the mirror, and it will surely make you feel very confident about the way you speak. Practice that more often to boost your confident level.
6. Read and learn full sentences, there is no short cut
You learnt Chinese, Arabic, Tamil or French in full sentences. Then why should learning English be any different. Read and learn in full sentences, speak in full sentences as well.
7. Stay calm and don't worry about grammar at the beginning
Don't worry about grammar in your speech. Even those who speak English fluently sometimes make grammatical mistakes. But, the most important thing is communicate without worrying about them. Once your foundation of English became stronger, you will learn to apply proper grammar in your spoken English.
8. Read an English newspaper and learn 10 words a day
9. Revisit the new words before you forget them
Use the new words often in your written or spoken English to enhance the memory and familiarity of those new words.
10. Practice. Practice. Practice. As the old man says, practice makes perfect
No pain no gain! There are no shortcuts in life. Definitely, there is no shortcuts in learning English. Make time to learn English, there are plenty of time in a day where we can use to learn English effectively.
